9 Behaviors That Can Ruin Your Relationship

Have you ever wondered why love sometimes fades even in the happiest and most successful relationships and why even the happiest couples break up?

What stops us from maintaining the attraction, passion, and closeness we once felt for our significant other?

Well, there’s a number of internal and external factors that determine this. And the most obvious answer is that healthy, meaningful, long-lasting relationships require much more than just love. They require mutual respect, appreciation, loyalty, and trust. They require both you and your partner to be willing to put hard work and invest into the relationship.

Healthy, harmonious, successful relationships require you and your significant other to treat each other with patience, kindness, and compassion. They require both of you to be willing to make sacrifices and compromises.

And, undoubtedly, being in this kind of relationship is one of the most amazing and fulfilling experiences. But what many couples fail to realize is that every relationship, even the happiest and most successful one can be easily ruined if they don’t pay attention to and take responsibility for their actions.

Here are 9 behaviors that can ruin your relationship:

1. Not listening to your partner.

Actively listening to your significant other shows them that you care about their opinions. It shows them that their words have a meaning for you. On the other hand, focusing and valuing only your own opinions leaves your partner with the impression that you’re a selfish person who is inconsiderate of other people’s feelings and opinions.

2. Not making enough time for your partner.

Couples that are in healthy, successful relationships always make time for each other. Because when you truly love and care about someone, there’s no such thing that could stop you from spending time with them. But, if you’re often ignoring your partner’s needs and prefer to spend time with your friends or family rather than with him/her, this is a sure sign your relationship has turned sour.

3. Not having trust in your partner.

Nothing destroys relationships as fast as lack of trust does. Even if your love is the strongest in the world, once you lose trust in your partner, your relationship can easily fall apart. Losing trust is easy, but regaining it is very hard.

4. Taking them for granted.

Just because you’re in a long term relationship with your partner, it doesn’t mean you don’t need to show them love every day. It doesn’t mean you should stop nourishing the love between you and maintaining the passion you felt at the beginning of the relationship.

Never believe that your partner will stay with you forever. If they don’t feel loved and respected, there’s nothing you can do to make them stay.

5. Not giving them space.

Happy couples respect each other’s boundaries. This means you need to respect your partner their need for personal time and space. On the other hand, if you’re needy all the time and want your partner to spend their time only with you, you can make them feel suffocated.

6. Cheating on your partner.

This doesn’t require a lot of explanation. It’s enough to just say that when you truly love someone, behaviors such as cheating have no place in the relationship.

7. Being jealous all the time.

Jealousy is not a bad thing as long as it’s reasonable and occasional. Because if you always doubt your partner and reproach them on their behavior when there’s no reason for that, you’re torturing both your partner and yourself.

You need to understand that both partners need to set time aside for their friends if they want to have a healthy relationship.

8. Flirting with others.

This is a no-no. of course, you’ll always find someone who will look more attractive than your partner, but that doesn’t mean that you should flirt with every person you’ll feel attracted to. In this way, you’ll hurt your partner’s feelings and also put your relationship in danger.

9. Keeping secrets from your partner.

This is how you can break their trust in you. Therefore, don’t ever bring yourself into a situation in which you could hurt your partner’s feelings and lie to them. Always tell them the truth, no matter how painful or cruel it might be – they’ll appreciate it the most.
